CT 09: Match 7: NZ v. SL: Vettori Brings NZ to Winning Mode! SL Virtually Out!

Vettori and co gave a big blow to the Sri Lankan team in a crucial encouter in Group B match. Having lost their earlier match, the Kiwis had to win this match to stay in this competition. SL with one win (against South Africa) and a loss (against England) also in a position to win their match. A loss would mean that NZ is out and if Sri Lanka losses, they may have a chance depending on other match results and net run rate.

Deciding to bowl first, Lankan bowling attack did not work as planned. Mccullum and Ryder gave a good start to Kiwis as they both added 125 runs for the first wicket.

So far, this is the first hundred plus run partnership for the first wicket in this edition of the Champions Trophy. Kiwis failed to keep the momentum and lost 5 wickets in the span of 36 runs.

Skipper Vettori and Guptill played sensibly and ensured that they do not lose their wicket unnecessarily. They also handled Mendis very well, who went without wicket for the 2nd continuous match.

Vettori missed his half-century by 2 runs but ensured that the team maintains good scoring rate. Mills hit 18 runs in 6 balls while Franklin had 28 in 21 balls. This increased the run rate as NZ ended set a target of 316 for Sri Lanka to chase.

Malinga went for 85 in his 10 overs, the costly bowler for the Lankans.

Dilshan's heroics worked to some extent. He made 41 in 31 balls. Jayasuriya scored 24 from 18. It was Jayawardene who took the responsibility on his shoulders. Until he was batting, SL had a hope of chasing the target. When he was on 77, he was bowled by Vettori and with that came down the hopes of Lankans.

Coming as 8th batsman, Kulasekara showed some courage and prolonged what was inevitable. He scored unbeaten 57 but that did not stop the Kiwis from registering their first win.

Shane Bond was punished once again as he went for 82 in his 9 overs without a wicket. Mills picked 3 wickets giving away 69 runs in his 10 overs. Vettori's 48 and 2 for 45 won him the man of the match award.
