Ashes 2009: 2nd Test: Flintoff's 5 wkts in 2nd Innings give England 1-0 Lead!

Flintoff's brilliant bowling performance in the 2nd innings of the 2nd test match in the Ashes 2009 has given England the 1-0 lead in the five test series with the first one drawn.

England have not beaten Australia since 1934 and this has become a relief for the entire English people.

Deciding to bat first, England started the attack with skipper Strauss leading from the front. Strauss made 161 but got out in the 2nd ball of the 2nd day's play. This was his 18th test century.

The first wicket partnership was 196 between Struass and Cook. The partnership was broken by Johnson trapping Cook leg before for 95. Aussies took 48 overs to taste the first blow.

The start was not well utilized by the rest of the players. Pietersen was the 3rd top scorer with 32.

England were in good position at the end of Day 1 with 364 for 6. They did not use the good first wicket star and the usual collapse ended their innings at 425.

Australia had a good chance of scoring more as they did in the first test. The four century makers--Katich, Ponting, North and Haddin, from the first test could not make contribution in the first innings. Hussey was the only half-century maker.

Anderson demolished the Australian batting order. Anderson had Hughes caught behind for 4 and Ponting followed him to the pavilion caught by Strauss for 2. Katich and Hussey added 93 for the 3rd wicket and took the score to 103. Australia were struggling at 156 for 8 at the end of day 2.

Harutiz and Siddle 44 for the 9th wicket and brought respect to the total. The last wicket added another 19 as Australia were bundled for 215.

England did not force the follow on though they had the right with a lead of 210 runs. England played sensibly and utilized the lead well. Strauss and Cook made 32 each and put 61 for the 1st wicket. Collingwood and Prior made half centuries which gave England a good lead. England declared at 311 for the loss of 6 wickets and set a target of 522.

Australia lost two wickets with just 34 on the board. Flintoff picked both the wickets. Ponting and Hussey added 44 for the 3rd wicket before Broad bowled skipper Ponting for 38. This opened the gate for England's victory.

Michael Clarke and Haddin stayed and delayed the defeat. Australia ended day 4 at 313 for 5 with Clarke scoring a fighting century. He was unbeaten on 125 and Haddin was at 80.

Day 5 resumed with Australia needing 209 runs and England needing 5 wickets.

Flintoff picked Haddin in the 2nd over caught by Collingwood. Johnson once again played useful innings but not good enough for Australia. Swann's flighted delivery beat Clarke who stepped out of the crease and hit the stumps. This assured victory for England. Johnson's half-century should have given him some confidence. He was the last batsman to get out bowled by Swann.

Flintoff picked 5 wickets and Swann had 4 for his account. England beat Australia by 115 runs.

Ashes 2009: 1st Test: Collingwood saves test for England! Last Wicket Plays 11 overs!

Australia should blame themselves insted of blaming the delay tactic applied by England. The last wicket of England--Andreson and Panesar played 11.3 overs and saved their side from defeat in the first test of the Ashes 2009.

Struggling at 20 for 2 when play resumed on Day 5, England had to minimum of 95 overs. Australia had the chance of bringing the 2nd ball during the end of the day.

Pietersen fell in the morning for 8, bowled by Hilfenhaus. Six overs later, captain Strauss followed him. At one stage, England were 70 for 5, with Collingwood and Flintoff in the crease. England needed another 99 runs to avoid the follow on.

They added 57 for the 6th wicket, but the important aspect was that they played 23.1 overs. With 112 more runs needed to make Australia play again, the chances were dim as the tail had to play minimum of 52 overs.

Collingwood and Broad played 17 overs, added 32 to the total. Swann consumed 63 balls from his side playing along with Collingwood. Swann was trapped leg before off Hilfenhaus.

Anderson joined Collingwood and they played under tremendous pressure as the overs were reducing. They added 12 runs for the 9th wicket but eliminated 7.2 overs from the balance overs. Collingwood after playing for 344 minutes and 245 deliveries, got out at the crucial stage. He was caught by Hussey at point off Siddle.

Anderson and Panesar had the responsibility but no one expected them to play 10 overs, especially against Australia.

In the 98th over, Anderson hit two continuous boundaries which took England past the innings defeat mark.

England were 7 runs ahead but had to play 10 more minutes. The 12th man came in and gave a word to both the batsmen. With 4 more overs to be bowled and 11 minutes remaining, time was constraint for Australia.

In the next over, both Physio and the 12th man came into the ground again. Ricky Ponting was not happy. England were wasting time here!

At the end of 105th over, batsmen shook hands and England have successfully drawn the first test.

Earlier, England made 435 with Pietersen top scoring with 69. Collingwood and Prior scored half-centuries to give England a good total on the board.

Ponting scored 150 and Katich scored 122. They both added 239 for the 2nd wicket which gave Australia the solid foundation.

Later, North and Haddin scored centuries and took Australia past 600. With Haddin dismissed for 121, Australia declared the innings at 674.

Ponting was delcared man of the match and he rightly said that he would have exchanged it for a wicket.

3rd ODI: Ind v. WI: Dhoni lead by Example, give India 2-1 lead!

In the last over thriller, a superb six by Dhoni over midwicket brought the equation from 10 in 5 balls to 4 in 4 balls.

Dhoni as said during the press meet earlier, took sometime to stay in the crease but finished well for India.

Frequent rain brought the match to 27 overs a side. The match started with 41 overs-a-side, but rain reduced it to 39 overs.

Rain again halted the match in the 10th over and reduced the game to 36 overs. In the same over, the match was redued to 27 overs.

Sarwan's innings gave West Indies the upper hand. He scored 62 in 59 balls with 5 fours and a six. West Indies finished with 186 in 27 overs.

The target was not easy to chase as the outfield was also slow due to rain. Based on duckworth-lewis method, the target was revised to 159 in 22 overs.

Karthick and Gambhir gave a good start with a 84-run partnership in 12 overs. Yuvaraj was out for 2. Dhoni then played a good innings and was not out with 46 in 34 balls.

He ensured that he stayed in the crease to ensure that he did not pass the pressure to the tail enders. India reached the victory target with a ball to spare.

India in West Indies: 2009 Schedule

India play 4 ODI matches against the West Indies in West Indies. After the early exit from T20 World Cup in England, India reached West Indies much earlier than the home team West Indies.

It is going to be an interesting battle as India lost to West Indies their super 8 match. The Indian team performance in the T20 was very poor as they have lost all of their super 8 matches and exited without making an impression.
