With Jayawardane's resignation, Sangakkara has been given the top post of the Sri Lankan cricket team. With Sri Lanka abandoned the rest of the tour in Pakistan, Jayawardane's captaincy came to an end.
He resigned after the loss against India in the ODI series. He said, he will quit after the test series tour against Pakistan. The first test was a draw and he scored a double century. The tour was abandoned after the terror attack against the Sri Lankan team in which many players including Sangakkara, Mendis were injured.
Jayawardane was one of the successful captains of Sri Lankan team, so the responsibility is much more for Sangakkara. He has to maintain the winning rate and also his batting form.
