Australia won the toss and decided to bat first. Usual pair of Gilchrist and Hayden opened the innings, but the partnership this time did not last long. Hayden was dismissed by Malinga in the fourth over of the game. Pointing looking to get his form back was out for 25 off Vaas. The field setting was very good by Jayawardane where he positioned himself in the slip and got a straight catch to dismiss Pointing.
