2nd Test: Ind v. Aus: Day 5: India Win by Huge Record Margin, 1-0 Up!
India beat Australia by 320 runs--a new record for India on day 5 of the 2nd Test played at Mohali. The victory was already in sight at the end of day 4, but the runs margin and the time of victory was not certain, like any future happenings. The match was completed in the 19th over of the morning--well before lunch.
Resuming the last day from 141 for 5, Australia needed a big effort to save the test. The victory to them was no even in the sight with 375 runs required with the last recognized pair in the crease.
In the first over, Zaheer bagged his first wicket of the second test. He bowled Haddin and he had no clue on what happend. The reverse swing did the trick. In his next over, he had White caught behind for 1. India just needed 3 more wickets and Lee came in. The beauty from Zaheer pitched on middle and swung away completed deceived Lee and struck his off stump, giving him a hat-trick chance.
Johnson negotiated the hat-trick and he added 50-run partnership which also helped Clarke to reach his 50, his first in the series.
The last two wickets were picked by Mishra to give a match figure of 7-106.
MS Dhoni was given the man of the match for his consistent 92 and 68 not out in the 2nd innings and his leadership skills.
India now, 1-0 up in the series, has to play the next text positively with more pressure on the Aussies as they have not lost like this.
During the presentation, Dhoni said: We got the perfect start after winning the toss and we were up to the mark in all departments. It was a very good track to bat on. I think Mishra bowled really well after a perfect start from the fast bowlers. It was a perfect Test match for us ... A lot depended on how quickly we could get the reverse swing going for nothing much was happening with the new ball. We were able to reverse swing the ball from the 12th or teh 13th over and after that it became hard for the batsman."
Ponting said, "Right from the first morning India were nice and aggressive. they took the momentum away from us early in the game. They thoroughly deserve their victory and congratulations to them ... We'll probably have a couple of days off after this, back to back matches are always hard. We'll fine-tune our skills before the next Test ... They're a very good bowling attack, their two seamers were terrific and they used the reverse swing well."
Sachin Tendulkar was given a momento for achieving the world record of highest run scorer and also for reaching the 12,000 run mark in test cricket.
Ganguly was also given momento for reaching 7000 test runs.
