1st T20: NZ v. SL: First Tour Win for NZ!

Sri Lanka lost the match in hand in the first T20 in Colombo. In the closely fought game, NZ won by 3 runs--their first win of the tour. NZ already lost the both the test matches to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka had a good start with Dilshan firing from the front. He scored 57 from 28 balls including 2 over the ropes. He started the chase of 143 with four continous fours of the first from Shane Bond. The return of Shane Bond was not welcomed by Sri Lanka. Mills replaced Bond in the third over. Dilshan did not spare him as he hit for two sixes. He reached his 50 in just 22 balls.

Sri Lanka were cruising well till his departure. They were at 64 for 2 in 6 overs requiring another 78 from 14 overs. Wonderful fielding effort sent Dilshan back home. Ryder took a wonderful low diving catch. He earlier ran out Jayawardene with a direct hit.

SL required 57 from the last 10 overs with 5 wickets in hand. But, they were short by 3 runs at the end. Good bowling changes by Vettori helped NZ taste their first victory. He brought himself and removed Rupasinghe LBW. More importantly, he gave just 2 runs.

33 from 5 overs with 4 wickets in hand. Oram gave 7 runs in the 17th over but he picked Matthews caught and bowled which brought NZ back in the game.

20 from 3 overs with 3 wickets in hand. Few sloppy mis-fielding gave away extra runs to SL. Last over required 9 runs with 3 wickets in hand. Oram picked two wickets in the first two balls. Bandara going for a big slog was caught brilliantly by Brendon McCullum at log off. He came too forward but jumped at the righ time and took a good catch. In the next delivery, Kulasekar hit it over long on but this time Broom had to go few steps backward to take a good catch.

4 balls, 9 runs, 1 wicket. Oram bowled well to finish the game in favor the Kiwis.

Earlier, deciding to bat first, the start was not that good. McCullum went early for 9. Taylor was the top scorer for NZ with 60 which consisted of 5 fours and a six in 45 balls. The other batsmen who reached double figure are Ryder (13) and Guptill (29).

Malinga picked two wickets for SL in the end. NZ managed to cross 140 and set a target of 142 for SL. Vettori was given man of the for his wonderful bowling spell and good captaincy.
