Deciding to bat, McCullum and Tyder gave a good start to NZ. Though McCullum missed his 50 by a run, the pair put on 84 for the first win in 62 balls. But SL could not stop Ryder from reaching 50. McCullum's 49 came off 34 balls which had 4 fours and 2 sixes while Ryder scored 52 in 37 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes.
Thanks to quick fire 32 from Guptill, which came in just 20 balls including 2 boundaries and a six. Dilshan's over changed the game in favor of NZ as he went for 31 runs in his 2 overs. Kulasekara gave away 40 in his 4 overs. Mendis and Jayasuriya bowled well as they conceeded 43 runs in their 8 overs.
Chasing 171, Dilshan was caught by Guptill off Band in the first over. Two balls later, Udawatte was caught by Broom off Mills for a duck. Jayasuriya also could not manage as he went for 7.
Jayawardene and skipper Sangakkara played well and ensured that the run rate is reasonably maintained. They added 67 for the 4th wicket in 43 balls. Jayawardene scored 41 while Sangakkar made 69. With Sangakkara getting out in the last ball of 19th over, all the hopes vanished for the Sri Lankans. Last over required 28 but managed to get only 5 runs.
Ryder was given the man of the match and series for his wonderful batting and fielding.
