What a match for the Indians and Tendulkar? The little master's century in the final once again gave India the trophy. Winning the crucial toss, Dhoni decided to bat first. Opening the innings with Dravid, Tendulkar dominated the innings from the beginning. His cover drives, straight drive, punching through extra cover, pedal sweep, stepping out and hitting over extra cover are treat for the eyes. Growing old makes man more mature and he is proving it again and again.
With his match winning performance, he has grabbed the 57th man of the match and 14th man of the series in his career, which itself is a record.
The century is his 44th in ODI format and 86 over all including Test matches. He stayed till the end of 46 overs before Mendis got him LBW. His 138 came in 133 balls which had 10 boundaries and a six. His first 50 came in 47 balls while the second one took 45 balls.
Dravid and Tendulkar added 95 for the first wicket. Dhoni who came in after the dismissal of Dravid scored 56. He maintained the tempo and also played singles to give Sachin the strike. They both added 110 runs in 115 balls for the 2nd wicket.
Yuvaraj joined Tendulkar and added quick 56 in 41 balls with 6 fours and a six. This pair added 71 to the total in just 57 balls. Yuvaraj was unbeaten on 56 as India ended their 50 overs with 319 on the board.
Malinga (1 for 81 in 10), Thushara (2 for 71 in 10) and Mendis (1 for 70 in 10) went for 222 in their 30 overs. It was surprising why Sangakkara did not use Mathews as he picked 6 wickets in the previous match against India.
Chasing 320 is a big task under light especially in the final. Though Sri Lanka maintained the run rate, they lost wickets at regular intervals. At the end of 11 overs, they were 85 for 3.
The dangerous opening batsmen Dilshan and Jayasuriya dominated the Indian bowling attack. They brought 50 in 39 balls.
Bhajji provided the break through by pitching it short for Dilshan to play a cut which he missed and was bowled. In his next over, he had Jayawardene caught and bowled. Jayasuriya was caught by Nehra off Yusuf Pathan in the 11th over.
Sangakkara's dismissal was unique. He lost the grip trying hit the full toss from RP Singh and his bat hit the stumps. Though he was not happy expecting a no-ball call, the umpires had a different opinion.
Kandamby and Kapugedera 70 for the 7th wicket but could not maintain the run rate in all the overs. Harbhajan picked 5 crucial wickets and ended with 9.4-0-56-5.
